Special Announcements

October 26th, 2019 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Renowned woodturner Eric Lofstrom will be providing an all-day demonstration followed by 2 one-day workshops on October 27th and 28th.

A passionate teacher and lifelong woodturner, Eric’s artistic works are known for their zen qualities and exceptional attention to quality. His teaching style focusses strongly on technique, tool control and artistic inspiration. Check out his website at https://www.ericlofstrom.com/

Demonstration:

Attendees to the all-day demonstration  will learn about the methods Eric uses to turn several projects (spinning tops, end-grain bowl/box, square rim bowl) ranging from very simple to advanced turning and an exploration of embellishing techniques along the way. Please note that Eric will not be reviewing woodturning biomechanics in any detail, so if you want to brush up on techniques before the demo or workshops, you might want to check out his video at https://vimeo.com/261409643.

Workshops

The one-day workshops will expand upon these techniques to produce Artistic Endgrain Bowls inspired by Eric’s Namaste Series.  Emphasis will be on tools control, techniques specific to turning endgrain and discussion of form. Attendees will also explore multiple elegant coloring & texturing embellishments Eric uses to add depth & drama to a captivatingly simple form. After this demo, you’ll see any small block of plain-grained wood as a potential piece of art! A more detailed description is attached. This course is applicable for all skill levels.  Wood is provided and only standard tools are required.

November 24, 2018

We are pleased to announce an upcoming demonstration day and two, one-day workshops with artisan Art Liestman from  the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild. Art is reknown for his distinct style in puzzling illusion vessels and items that don’t look like they have been turned. Check out his gallery at www.artliestman.com.

  • Art will be demonstrating three (!) different techniques on Saturday, November 24th at our usual hangout (The Centre in Brentwood Bay, 1229 Clarke Road) starting at 9 am:
  • the Design and Construction of Teapots, with an emphasis on thinking outside the box in terms of design
  • Therming – a process to turn multiple curved surfaces on wood blanks, where the axis of rotation does not lie within the blank being turned
  • The Lost Wood Process: This intro to the process serves as a great primer for those taking the subsequent workshop and an overview of the technique for those that can only make the demo.

Lost Wood Workshops

Have you ever been challenged to find good woodturning stock in lumber yards filled with 2×4’s? Art’s hands-on workshop will teach you how to make beautiful turnings from thinner stock using the Lost Wood Process . This workshop is suitable for ALL SKILL LEVELS. The two, one-day workshops will be held at Bryan Kemper’s workshop (9323 Carnoustie Crescent, North Saanich) on Sunday, November 25th and Monday, November 26th, running from 9 am to 4 pm.

  • Demonstration Day only: $40 (members), $50 (non-members). Please come early to pay your fees before the 9 am start
  • Demonstration plus One-day workshop: $175 (paid up members only; payable before or on the Demonstration Day)

Island Woodturners Guild is pleased to announce the upcoming demonstration day, and two days of hands-on workshops, with well-known woodturning artist, Jason Marlow of Qualicum Beach BC.  Jason has about 40 years of experience as a full-time professional woodturner, and is willing to share that experience to the benefit of our members.

The demonstration day will be June 24/17, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at our usual meeting place, The Centre in Brentwood Bay, 1229 Clarke Road.  Registration fee for attendees is $40 (members), $50 (non-members);  all are welcome.  Please arrive sufficiently early to pay fees before the 9:00 am start.

The hands-on workshops will take place at Bryan Kemper’s workshop, 9323 Carnoustie Crescent, North Saanich, running from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday June 25/17, and Monday June 26/17.   For those enrolling in a workshop (paid-up members only), the fee is $175 for the demonstration day and one workshop day combined, payable at the June 24/17 registration.

Jason’s presentation will focus on design considerations, fundamental woodturning techniques, effective tool sharpening,  tool handling and ergonomics, and surface decorative treatments.   In the workshops, he likes to coach, mentor and encourage the participants, who many be at any level in the spectrum of experience and skill.  The overall event will be of considerable benefit to both new and ‘seasoned’ Guild members.

With this notice, workshop registration is open.  Please email Phil Cottell at plcottell41@gmail.com promptly to register;  first come, first served.  A waiting list will be  kept in case of over-subscription.  Details about equipment or supplies needed for the workshops will be sent to registered participants.
All participants agree to help with cleanup at the end of each day.

“ISLAND WOODTURNERS PRESENT”

This is the title of our first IWG public show to be held from August 28th – September 3rd, 2017, at the Tulista Park Art Centre in Sidney.

All IWG members – from beginner to advanced – are invited to participate. This is an opportunity to get experience showing your work with the support and company of friends. It is a show and sale which gives you the option to simply display your work or display and sell. There will also be ongoing turning demonstrations and participants will be encouraged to volunteer for these and other tasks.

To cover the costs of the event, there will be modest entry and commission fees. (Any excess funds will go into the Guild coffers.)

The amount of these fees depends upon how many members participate. In order to estimate this, we are asking those who are interested to complete an Expression of Interest form. You will receive this form in an email over the next few days. Please print it off, complete the form and bring it to the next Guild meeting.

Formal registration will take place at the Guild meeting on May 21st.

The show committee consists of Tim Soutar, Andre Robin, Cheryl Samuel and Phil Cottell, with the added assistance of Jan Soutar and Donna Cottell. Contact one of us if you have suggestions or questions.

(Our host organization for this event is the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula.)
